If you’re replacing a roof in Myrtle Beach, you’ve likely run into two names more than any other: IKO Dynasty and GAF Timberline HDZ. Both are premium architectural shingles. Both come with strong warranties. And both get installed on thousands of homes across the Grand Strand every year.
So which one is actually better for a coastal South Carolina home?
At Klaus Roofing, we’ve installed both — and we’re going to give you the straight answer.

A Quick Overview of Both Shingles
IKO Dynasty is IKO’s flagship architectural shingle. It features a dual-layer construction, ArmourZone nailing strip, and FastLock sealant for enhanced wind resistance. In coastal markets like ours, the wind rating matters — Dynasty is rated for winds up to 130 mph.
GAF Timberline HDZ is the best-selling roofing shingle in North America. It uses GAF’s LayerLock Technology and StainGuard Plus algae protection. It carries a wind speed rating up to 130 mph as well, and GAF’s Lifetime Limited Warranty is one of the strongest in the industry when installed by a GAF-certified contractor.
Head-to-Head: The Categories That Matter for Grand Strand Homes
Wind Resistance
Both shingles are rated to 130 mph — which is critical for Myrtle Beach, where tropical systems and strong coastal storms are a fact of life. IKO Dynasty’s ArmourZone gives it a slightly wider nailing area, which can reduce installer error and improve wind performance in practice. Edge: IKO Dynasty (marginally).
Algae Resistance
Coastal humidity means algae staining is a real concern. GAF’s StainGuard Plus protection carries a 25-year algae warranty. IKO Dynasty also has algae protection but their standard algae warranty is shorter. Edge: GAF Timberline HDZ.
Warranty Strength
GAF offers a Lifetime Limited Warranty that includes a non-prorated period for the first 10 years — but only when installed by a GAF-certified contractor as part of a qualifying system. IKO also offers a Lifetime Limited Warranty on Dynasty. Both are strong. The key difference is GAF’s enhanced warranty for certified installs. Edge: GAF Timberline HDZ (with certified install).
Aesthetics
Both shingles have excellent curb appeal. IKO Dynasty has a bold, deep shadow line. GAF Timberline HDZ offers a wider color range and their Dual Shadow Line gives roofs a dimensional appearance that photographs beautifully. This comes down to personal preference, but GAF edges it on color variety. Edge: GAF Timberline HDZ.
Coastal Climate Performance
Both shingles perform well in hot, humid coastal conditions. IKO’s ArmourZone and FastLock sealant system was specifically designed with high-wind coastal markets in mind. For homes within a mile of the ocean — where wind uplift is highest — IKO Dynasty’s nailing zone advantage can be meaningful. Edge: IKO Dynasty (for high-wind zones).
What Does Klaus Roofing Recommend?
Honestly? Both are excellent shingles and either one will serve a Myrtle Beach home well for decades when installed correctly. The choice often comes down to three things:
- How close are you to the water? Within a mile of the shoreline, IKO Dynasty’s wind performance specs give us a slight preference for it.
- Is algae staining a concern? If you’ve had issues with black streaks in the past, GAF’s 25-year StainGuard Plus warranty is hard to beat.
- What’s your aesthetic preference? GAF offers more color options. IKO has bolder shadow lines.
The most important factor — more important than which shingle you choose — is the quality of the installation. A premium shingle installed carelessly will fail before a budget shingle installed by an expert. That’s why Klaus Roofing is known on the Grand Strand for doing the job right the first time.
