Roof Replacement - Under the Metal Roof in North Myrtle Beach

Tuesday, October 22nd, 2024 by Fran Bailey

The homeowners were surprised to find they had a roof leak. They previously choose a metal roof, hearing that metal would extend the lifetime of their roof. The "Bargain" the received through, included a bargain value underlayment. Underlayment is like having a tarp on your roof as a layer of protection against the elements. While the shingle or metal do most of the hard work, if they are worn, damaged or blown off during a storm, the underlayment will keep your decking dry. Some roofers choose tar paper underlayment has been around since the 1800s. It is a combination of tar and sheets of paper or fiberglass. It's fairly inexpensive, breathable and is used with all types of roofs. It's downside is it's heavy and can easily tear during installation or overtime.

Klaus Roofing uses synthetic underlayment, as do most contractors these days. This type of underlayment is typically made of woven plastic. As one of our certified inspectors, Brian Thom, puts it, "Synthetic underpayment is very durable. The only way to tear it is with a knife or scissors. It is fast and easy to install, UV and water-resistant, and helps provide for a safe roof installation." Synthetic underlayment is lighter, but durable and better at water tightness. The homeowners found that they needed us to remove their metal roof and properly protect their home starting with the underlayment. Now they have the full Klaus System to protect their home.
