Shingle Overhang

American Businessman Sanford Weill once said, “Details create the big picture,” and that is absolutely true of the Klaus Roofing Way! One of these details that can make a big difference in the long-term performance of the roof is the overhang of the shingles over the drip edge or rake edge.

❌ Too Much

If shingles are allowed to overhang too much, they can sag and curl downward in the heat.

❌ Too Little

If the shingles have too little overhang, you may get water behind the gutter at the eave, or even have water run under the shingles at the rakes. You may even encounter houses where the shingles don’t even make it to the edge of the drip or rake edge!

✅ The Klaus Roofing Way

According to IKO’s Dynasty Application Instructions, the recommended shingle overhang is between ¼” – ¾” at the eaves and rakes. Keep in mind that if an eave or rake isn’t perfectly straight, the exact amount of overhang may vary along its length. For maximum wind resistance, the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety (IIBHS) recommends an overhang of ¼”, which is on the lower end of IKO’s recommended range.
